Home of the Month | November 2014

If you’ve taken advantage of the cooler weather and walked the Crescent Heights Neighborhood, you may have noticed all the renovations happening to the house at 794 24th Avenue N, owned by Jannean and Art Shaul and their loyal dog, Nina.

A few years after they retired and traveled a while, Jannean and Art found a joint interest in remodeling houses.  They enjoy the challenges and the processes of renovating a home.  They have lived in all  the homes they have remodeled and had been looking in St. Petersburg for some time, when they came upon this two-story, three bedroom/three bath house. Jannean explains, “We’ve always liked St. Petersburg and we have friends here. We like that people walk by and say hello. Art joined in the conversation with “It’s very friendly”.

The home is smartly decorated with restored antiques and wood floors throughout and has a very welcoming feel to it. On the first floor, the front door opens to the living room that connects to the dining room, allowing for easy conversation to be held between the two rooms or the rooms can be individually closed off by closing the beautifully painted French doors that separate the two rooms. A small hallway leads to a bathroom and to the open kitchen area that leads to the newly screened in pool deck and backyard.  A flight of stairs, takes you to the second floor which has two bedrooms and a bathroom and the master bedroom.  The master bedroom has a sitting room and a private bathroom and a beautiful view of the tree lined property, virtually like a tree house.

Jannean and Art have made many structural improvements to the home, such as outdoor fencing a new roof and gutters, added a well and irrigation for the new landscaping, added new a/c and ducts and installed new wood flooring.  They have remodeled two bathrooms and had the exterior of the house and much of the interior of the house painted. They do this while always trying to maintain the integrity of the original house.

Restoration seems to be a running theme throughout the home.  Art is working on replacing the existing baseboard and window frames by designing and building window frames and baseboard that are more in line with the period of the home.  Similarly, Jannean’s attentiveness can be seen in the antiques she has restored and the landscaping in the yard. Their attention to detail only adds to the home’s appeal.

As the cooler weather prompts you to go outside and take a walk around the Crescent Heights Neighborhood, take a moment to admire this month’s Home of the Month.

Just a Note to All: Nioma and I, pass the responsibility of writing the “Home of the Month” article along with mix feelings of sadness and happiness (no more deadlines)!   We have enjoyed these last couple of years and want to say Thank You, to all the homeowners that have allowed us to interview them for this monthly article.  We’ve found new friends, great ideas and we have been constantly reminded as to why we live in the Crescent Heights Neighborhood…we have great Neighbors! Thank you.
