Home of the Month: 2400 8th Street North

This month’s article is about the home at 2400 8th Street, North where Howard and Sharon Otts have lived for approximately twenty five years.  Their home is a quaint concrete block house which they have renovated with energy efficient windows, replaced the roof, added a skylight and updated the kitchen.

When asked what their favorite room of the house was, they easily said the outdoor patio area, where we had a lovely discussion of the newly constructed pergola and beautifully landscaped yard. The newly landscaped area on the north side of the house provides Howard and Sharon with an outdoor extended living space.

Lined with a podocarpus hedge, red cedar, and Withlacoochee Viburnum trees, it offers privacy and an array of color when in bloom. The groundcover is pine straw.  In the center of the side yard is a grassy looking area, which provides a nice contrast to the growing trees and scrubs around the area. The side yard is perfect for enjoying the wonderful weather that Florida offers.  The pergola offers the shade needed during the hotter months of the year, and the adjacent open area offers light and a place for Howard’s telescope to enjoy his hobby of sky-observing and star gazing.

After trying many different types of landscaping for this outdoor area of which many did not succeed, they wanted to try using Florida native plants.  They contacted Wilcox Nursery for a way to design the yard with Florida friendly native plants. “We decided to put in plants that wanted to grow in Florida.  As a result we have bees and beautiful flowers, a mini-Sunken Gardens.”

The Otts added an outdoor cooking area, which consists of an all-in-one unit gas powered grill, mini refrigerator and a counter with seating . Adorning the other side of the pergola covered area is very comfortable outdoor furniture. The entire area works together to provide a space for cooking and entertaining.

Sharon and Howard would recommend Wilcox Nursery.  The Nursery specializes in Florida native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses.  They are at 12501 Indian Rocks Road, Largo Florida 33774 (www.wilcoxnursery.com) Phone727-595-2073.  Bruce Turley of Wilcox Nursery worked up a blueprint of the landscape, which Howard and Sharon keep handy so they can easily identify the many native plants that adorn the front and side yards of the home.

When asked what they like best about the Crescent Heights neighborhood, they responded with enthusiasm, “We love this neighborhood, it keeps getting better. We like to shop local and walk everywhere.”  They added “This neighborhood has access to everything and is centrally located five minutes to I-275 and ten minutes to the best beaches in the world!”
