Home of the Month: 525 26th Ave N

Many of you may already know this Month’s Home of the month, located at 525 26th Avenue N, by its welcoming cat named Stormy.

The house was purchased about a year ago by Karry and Brian Morrison. Previously to the Morrison’s purchasing this house, the house had been family owned since 1928, when the area around the house consisted mostly of orange groves and few other houses. There was one contingency upon buying the house, it was that Stormy the Cat could stay. The Morrison’s agreed and Stormy has embraced her new role of greeter to anyone who stops or walks by…even dogs!

The Morrison family consists of Brian, Karry, young son, William “Liam” and four cats, Stormy, Mattie, Addison, and Rose. They also have a dog, Abraham. Karry works in marketing and Brian is a teacher at Largo High School. Previous to moving to the Crescent Heights area, they lived near the intersection of 10th Street and 54Th Avenue.

With William leading the way, they often go to the Crescent Lake Park to enjoy the open play area that is only five blocks from their home. They find Crescent Heights Neighborhood, to be quiet, friendly and having a strong sense of community. It is not uncommon, for neighbors to stop and chat while the Morrison’s are working on the house or to pet Stormy, who takes advantage of the sunny southern exposure of the home.

The house was built in 1928; it has three bedrooms, family room and two and half baths. In addition to the main house, there is a garage apartment that has two bedrooms and one bath. The additional living space above the garage is beneficial for Brian’s parents who enjoy coming to St. Petersburg for the Florida “winter” weather.

A welcoming aspect of the home is the bright and cheery large front porch which provides a nice play area for William and relaxing area for Karry and Brian. The front porch has a beautiful eye catching tongue and grove style wood ceiling. The large front porch is reminiscent of many older homes in the South, which provides a friendly area in which to greet visitors and neighbors.

The Morrison’s do have some planned renovations for the home, however for now they will be concentrating their efforts on the front yard landscaping. They will be adding items, such as a hedge, flowers and a fence so that they can enjoy their front yard as an extension of their porch.

If you should see Brian, Karry or William outside on one of these lovely spring days, please stop to say hello or take a moment to meet Stormy the cat. – Nioma Brown and Anita Thompson
