Home of the Month | June 2014

Louise and Allen Barrett have lived at 820 24th Avenue North, 27 years, and yet at times the address is still referred to as the “Dudley” house, referring to the home’s previous owners, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley and their nine children.  In 1987, Louise and Allen knew this was the house for them, they had three children and one on the way and this house offered them space and a fun, safe neighborhood in which to raise a family.

The house has several nice touches of craftsmanship that many of the houses built in the 1920’s have, such as crown molding; wood floors, crystal door knobs, arched doorways, built-in cabinetry in the dining room and bedrooms and a fireplace, actually this house has two fireplaces. One in the living room and another in the family room.  Louise is very happy with the wood flooring throughout the home, that has been refinished by the local flooring company, Balamar Hardwood Flooring, owner:  Mariusz Balaban, Phone: 727-898-0333.  Louise explained “through the years, this house has had many add-ons, such as additional bedrooms, a mother-in-law suite and now the ultimate addition a new house.”

After their children have grown and moved on to successful careers, Louise and Allen decided to downsize to a smaller living space and after looking at other areas around Pinellas County, they could not find an area that they enjoyed as much as Crescent Heights. Therefore, Louise and Allen will soon be moving into their new house built on the adjacent lot of the existing home. Once they are settled in the new home, their existing home will be for sale. The new home design has some of the features that the existing home has, such as the Jack and Jill bathroom layout, allowing one bathroom to be accessed by two separate bedrooms, wood flooring and plenty of closet space.

Louise works with Allen at his law practice that handles wills, trusts, estates, personal injury and real estate law.  Their office is located at 3637 4th Street, North, #460.  Louise still finds time to follow her passion, video editing.  She carved out a nook in her living room that gives her room for her computer and additional work space for the challenging job of cutting several hours of video into a few hours and then transfers the finished product to a DVD. She’s currently working on a DVD project for her church and a wedding DVD for a happy bride and groom.

Louise and Allen enjoy the many things that the Crescent Heights neighborhood has to offer such as the friendly neighbors; the unique neighborhood homes, big ones and small ones; the proximity to the stores on 4th street and 9th street; being able to bike to downtown or bike to a Ray’s baseball game.  They look forward to hosting a Crescent Heights Neighborhood Porch Party in their new home, which has an open entertaining area, just perfect for the friendly gatherings of the Neighborhood Association.
