Home of the Month: 843 26th Avenue North

Happy New Year! From the writers of the Home of the Month, Nioma Brown and Anita Thompson.

To start the 2014 year off we interviewed a relatively new family to the Crescent Heights Neighborhood, Corrie, Neal and Charlotte Bontrager and their cat, Phillip. They reside at 843 26th Avenue North.

The Bontrager’s have been in a whirlwind of changes.  After moving here from North Carolina in August, 2013, they immediately started renovating the house. They knew they wanted to keep the original style of the 1925 home, such as the push button electrical switches and yet at the same time add some modern conveniences.  They started with updating the plumbing and painting the interior of the home. They continued the updates by remodeling the kitchen and master bathroom and moved on to the garage where they replaced the original bi-fold garage door with an electric garage door.  They had the exterior of the house painted by Halloween.  They did all of this in a short period of time, in order to be ready for the arrival of their little girl, Charlotte.

Their front door opens to one of the Bontrager’s favorite combination of rooms, the spacious living room and dining room area that leads to the kitchen.  Off of the living room is a playroom that has already been claimed by young Charlotte’s toys and stuffed animals.  The roomy three bedroom two bath house has a warm welcoming feeling which comes from all the natural light that shines through the many windows that had been replaced by the previous owners. The home is painted in hues of earthy colors, which compliment the original nature wood flooring throughout the home. The kitchen has white built-in cabinetry with original glass design cabinet doors.  The remodeled kitchen has white bead-board covering the walls with the upper wall area painted in a soft gray and willow green subway tiled backsplash and complimentary gray countertops.  This is a very different look from the black and red tiled kitchen the Bontrager’s first saw when they moved in. Adjacent to the kitchen there’s an all windowed room, used as a pantry, and it leads to the back door of the house that goes out to a deck and spacious back yard.

The Bontrager’s were very pleased with the remodeling performed by  contractor, Grady and Diane Portelli of Quality Home Renovators,  St. Petersburg, Florida – Phone:  727-437-6200, and Creative Solutions, 201 12th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL – Phone:  727-459-9528. The Bontrager’s would recommend both of them and were very pleased with the finished product of both companies.

When the couple was asked about what they liked about the neighborhood, they had this to say, “So many young families around, we can walk to my sister’s house or to the park, it’s all within walking distance.” Corrie enthusiastically added, “All the trees and brick streets in this neighborhood give this area a lot of character and the styles of the homes are all different”.

Corrie is a registered nurse and Neal is a teacher and a coach for the St. Petersburg High School football team. The Bontrager’s enjoy taking care of two month old Charlotte, being outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.  They have enjoyed the central location of the Crescent Heights neighborhood; close to downtown and the beaches.  Corrie’s parents live nearby in Placido Bayou and were the ones who first saw the house and encouraged Corrie and Neal to take a look at it. Corrie and Neal are very glad they did.

If you happen to see Corrie and Neal strolling with Charlotte, please say hello to our new neighbors of Crescent Heights.

If you or someone you know who would like to have their home featured in the Home of the Month

Article, please let us know and we’d be happy to interview them in 2014.

Have a Happy and Safe New Year!
