Home of the Month: 763 23rd Avenue North

The Lusignan family, Tim, Janice, and Paris have a wonderful big home with a lot of history.  It is instantly recognizable on the block of 23rd Avenue North, for it is one of the few three story houses in the area with a basement, and it is painted a Key West yellow.

The Lusignan’s wanted to return to the area that Tim had been raised as a young child.   They also wanted to be around extended family so that their daughter could have the experience of having family around as she grows up. One of the first priorities they had, once they moved to the area, was to find a church. They are members of the City on a Hill Church (www.cityonahillchurch.tv) at Willis S. Johns Recreation Center, 6635 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, North, St. Petersburg.

Tim works in the technology industry and Janice is a part-time personal trainer and homeschools their daughter, Paris.  They have a combined family of five children, including a set of college age, quadruplets, Samantha, Mitchell, Lauren and Hannah. The family is rounded out with Clyde, a giant schnauzer and Rascal, a shih-tzu yorkie mix.

Prior to living in Florida they lived in the San Francisco Bay area of California.  In California, they had “hands-on” experience with remodeling several homes. “We swore we would NOT buy a fixer upper…oh well, we bought a fixer upper.”  When they saw the house at 763 23rd Avenue North, they knew that “This is the one and that it was meant to be”.  After purchasing the home in April, 2010, they wanted to “Restore the grand lady to the way it should be restored and be put back the way she was.”

Tim and Janice experience with remodeling houses was very helpful with this house; they started with the foundation of the home. The home had been empty for a while, so they insisted on having the foundation inspected before purchasing the home. The remodeling started with pouring concrete to reinforce the foundation, they updated the electrical, and had the wood floors of the home re-finished. In all, they had to tear down and replace about 60% of the interior.  They remodeled the kitchen, which originally was very small; they enlarged the area by tearing down a wall and making it a fully useable space, for large gatherings of friends and family.

The exterior of the house was originally old grey and burnt red brick with burnt red grout throughout the building, “very depressing and sad looking!”  To change this, Tim and Janice decided new stucco and yellow paint would make the building look “happy” and Key West like.

Clayton Builders, Inc. at 763 22nd Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33704, Phone: 727-385-8756, assisted with all the remodeling of this house.  The Lusignan’s are very pleased with the service and the collaboration with this company.  They would recommend the Clayton Builders to others.

When asked what future renovations they had, Tim responded “it’s never ending, with a house like this, there are always things for us to fix-up and improve.  However, we would like to replace the existing roof, with a metal roof, so that the entire home would have a Key West feel to it.”

When asked what they enjoy about the Crescent Heights neighborhood, they both enthusiastically responded, the location, “We go downtown and try new restaurants and Crescent Lake Park, is right here for running and walking, which we do a couple of nights a week.”  They added “We love our neighbors and outdoor gatherings”.
