RSVP Maureen Camphire,

October’s book choice, The Underground Railroad by Colton Whitehead was favored by several book club members who were eager to read this National Book Award winning novel. The author is also a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and recipient of other awards for his previous work.

Book Club member Susan Allen has submitted this review which was adapted from the summary provided on Lit Lovers website attributed to the publisher. This book portrays a young slave’s adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. She takes off with Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, who knows about the Underground Railroad. Matters do not go as planned. Though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted.

In Whitehead’s ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor—engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora embarks on a harrowing flight, state by state, seeking true freedom. Like the protagonist of Gulliver’s Travels, Cora encounters different worlds at each stage of her journey—hers is an odyssey through time as well as space. As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the unique terrors for black people in the pre–Civil War era, his narrative seamlessly weaves the saga of America from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. It is a powerful meditation on the history we all share.

We will meet on Tuesday, October 24 from 7 to 9 PM to discuss The Underground Railroad. Location to be announced. For more information contact
