Book Nook | Girl Waits With Gun

girl-waits-with-gunSheila Julian picked February’s book and sent the following review:

From New York Times best-selling author, Amy Stewart, comes an enthralling novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nation’s first female deputy sheriffs. In fact the title, Girl Waits With Gun, is an actual newspaper headline about lead character Constance Kopp. As a woman living at the end of the Victorian era, Miss Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years prior. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

February’s book club discussion will be at 835 26th Avenue N. New members, friends, and neighbors are always welcome. For more information please contact maurcamp@verizon.net.

Arts and Culture Fair

The event will be held from 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, February 27 at the Church of the Beatitudes, 2812 Eighth Street North. Also, Eighth Street North will be blocked off between 28th and 29th Avenues North.

Local artists from the neighborhood will be exhibiting their works of art in the Church of the Beatitudes. Simultaneously, the outdoor area will have cultural displays, traditional dance and music, and ethnic foods. In addition, some cultural groups from Saint Petersburg International Folk Fair Society (SPIFFS) will be there to enhance the festive atmosphere.

Spread the word and reserve your space if you are an artist! It’s a unique opportunity because there will be no charge for artists to display and sell their work.
